Walking your dog is an important part of your pet’s day, not only for them to relieve themselves but it’s also vital for their mental stimulation and health. On average dog owners walk their pooches for nearly 9 hours a week*, that’s a long time to be spent outside without the proper dog walking gear, so we have put together a guide on what you’ll need to have the best walk possible.
We all know how unpredictable British weather can be, even the height of summer is prone to a rainy day or two. We’d suggest investing in some waterproof clothing to protect you from a heavy downpour. All waterproof garments are given a waterproof rating, this is measured with a number ranging from around 1,500mm to 20,000mm. The higher the number, the more waterproof the product.
Waterproofness is tested to ensure the product meets the British Standard (which must be more than 1,500mm). Waterproof ratings are measured in millimetres using a Hydrostatic Head test. In a Hydrostatic Head test, the fabric is pulled tight under a 1 inch diameter sealed tube of water. This is then observed over 24 hours to ascertain how many millimetres of water the fabric can withstand before it soaks through. The level at which water starts to come through the fabric is the hydrostatic head, which is measured in mm. See the below video for more information.
Rating | Weather | Products |
1,500mm | Light rain | Pakka Waterproof Jacket |
5,000mm | Moderate rain | Bachill Waterproof Jacket |
10,000mm | Heavy rain | Rainforest Waterproof Jacket |
20,000mm |
Extremely heavy rain |
Ultra Tempest 3-Layer Waterproof Jacket |
Depending on the time of year, you may decide to wear a lighter waterproof coat, like a Pakka Jacket or one that will also keep you warm, like a Thunderstorm 3 in 1 Jacket which comes with a detachable fleece on the inside.
We would also recommend a pair of waterproof trousers to keep you dry and comfortable on your daily walks.
The best dog walking shoes can vary depending on your area or where you like to walk. If you walk through fields or muddy woods, you may find wellington boots are the best option. Boots such as our Neoprene Long Mucker are a good all-rounder, with great grip and waterproof abilities. If you regularly go on long hikes with your dog, you may prefer walking boots or shoes. You can find waterproof pairs like the Extreme Odyssey Waterproof Vibram Boots which will provide extra support to your feet while walking, but will still keep them dry and comfortable.
It’s not only you who needs to dress for the outdoors, your dog also needs a few products to help them explore safely. Jackson Pet Co. has essentials for your dog from clothing to beds to accessories. To start with the basics, a collar and lead are crucial, even if you plan to let your dog off the lead. It’s a good idea to get your pooch used to walking with a leash first. You can pick leads and collars that are reflective, like the Jackson Pet Co Reflective Dog Lead and Jackson Pet Co Reflective Dog Collar to ensure your pet is safe and seen on dark mornings and evenings.
You might find your dog needs to wear a coat in colder weather, the Jackson Pet Co Water-Resistant Dog Jacket will keep them warm and also offers water-resistance, keeping them dry in light rain.
Now you know what to wear, why not explore some places you’ve never visited before? Our National Parks Guide will give you ideas for your next dog-friendly holiday.
