10 Travel Essentials: Packing List for Gap Year & Adventure Travelers

Planning your travels? Deciding what to pack for your gap year or next trip is an exciting part of your adventure! Remember, it’s important to be prepared when travelling and no list can be exhaustive, so you should always check what you might need for each specific destination you are visiting and for the activities you will be partaking in.

1.   Travel documents

Absolute essentials. You literally can’t leave the country without them! Triple-check you’ve got these in a safe place that’s easily accessible when you need them, and it’s worth making some copies or having them backed up online.

  • Travel Insurance

You should also check these documents are valid and that your passport still has at least six months remaining after your return date but do check the FCDO for the latest requirements as they vary by country.

Besides your travel documents, it’s the most essential thing to take on your gap year or adventure tour. After all, you’ll be living out of it for the next few weeks, months or even years as you uncover the world. A large rucksack will prepare you for all your adventures big or small.

3. Portable Power Bank

Keep your devices charged on the go with a portable power bank so you can be entertained and stay connected during long journeys or in locations without power. A lightweight one that holds at least 2 full charges is recommended.

4. Padlock

Many hostels provide lockers however few supply padlocks. It’s recommended to carry your own with you on your travels to keep personal items locked away safely. It’s best to choose one with a combination lock, rather than a key, in case you lose it.

5. Travel Water Bottle

Stay hydrated with a lightweight water bottle. Choose from collapsible bottles, metallic bottles and even ones with a handy karabiner clip. No matter what’s on your travel itinerary, there’s a practical water bottle for all sorts of activities. Love the water? You’ll need this! Whether you want to snorkel coral reefs, kayak crystal clear lagoons or race down the slides at waterparks, capture the moment on your phone with a waterproof case.
