PLANET

We try to minimise our environmental impact for the benefit of our environment both locally and globally through our circular economy initiatives and waste management.

CIRCULAR ECONOMY

PACKAGING

We are continually redesigning our packaging to remove and reduce packaging materials, and where we can’t, we strive to make the packaging from recycled materials that can be recycled at end of life.

Some of our changes for the better are:

  • Replacing plastic kimbals with natural Linen string.
  • Where we can’t use string, we’re phasing in the use of recycled plastic kimbals.
  • Reducing the number of swing tags on our products.
  • Reducing the size of card packaging on our products and ensuring the card is not laminated.
  • Removing unnecessary tissue paper in our delivery packaging.
  • Moving our paper packaging to recycled materials.
  • We still have work to do on areas where there is not a good solution without risking damage to product in transportation, storage, and display. We are striving to find solutions in these areas.

POLYBAGS

Our delivery polybags are made of 100% recycled materials that can be recycled at end of life. We are also trialling removal of these bags in our customer deliveries. If you receive any damaged product as a result of this please let us know by emailing [email protected]

Our plastic carrier bags are made from 100% recycled content and can be recycled at local drop off points. They are designed so they can be re-used until they are no longer functional and then recycled to give them a new lease of life.

Our Ecommerce bags are made from 90% recycled content, we are working towards 100% when durability allows. These bags can also be recycled at local drop off points.

We use recycled plastic as it has a lower carbon footprint than paper and does not contribute to the logging of natural habitats. We encourage everyone to recycle their plastics at end of life to ensure the plastic stays in circulation and out of our environment.

PRODUCT & PACKAGING

We are continually working to improve the recyclability of our product and packaging. The majority of our packaging materials can be recycled either at home or at local collection facilities. The following guide provides guidance for recycling:

packaging;

BATTERY RECYCLING

Two out of three batteries are thrown away and end up in landfill. Batteries are classified as hazardous waste as they breakdown releasing chemicals that damage the environment and pose a fire risk. Our Mountain Warehouse stores offer battery recycling boxes to help facilitate safe recycling of old batteries.

ELECTRICAL RECYCLING

WHAT IS IT?

If you purchase a new electrical/ electronic item, we will recycle your old one for free. The item must be similar in type and/or function to the new item being purchased from us and have the same intended usage. It doesn’t need to have originally been purchased from us or be the same brand as the new item being purchased. Many electrical items can be repaired or recycled, saving natural resources, and reducing their impact on the environment. If you do not recycle, electrical equipment will end up in landfill where hazardous substances will leak out and cause soil and water contamination – harming wildlife and human health.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Bring back your old electrical item to a Mountain Warehouse store within 28 days of purchase. The staff will ask for proof of purchase of a new Mountain Warehouse electrical item of the same type. We will then recycle the old item on your behalf. When recycling an item via one of our stores, please ensure that any personal data is removed, and that the product is clean, dry, and free from food waste and contamination. Stores may refuse to take back electrical items that do not meet these criteria.

WASTE SCHEMES

Globally we partner with industrial waste contractors who help support our aim of zero waste to landfill. In our UK controlled operations, we send zero waste to landfill, instead our recycling goes to industrial recycling facilities for a second lease of life. And our general non-recyclable waste is turned into energy to power UK homes (23% of renewable energy is created in this way in the UK). We are members of international waste schemes and pay taxes on the electrical, battery and packaging waste generated by our product sales. This supports recycling infrastructures in the UK and internationally.
